III. Supposed items of training courses:
37 lectures and 15 practical exercise-testing seminars will be presented on 6 cycles in 13 days period.
The main themes of Epidemiology Research Methods and Statistical Parameters supposed to be presented on training courses:

  • Descriptive statistic parameters and standardization methods: Crude rate- Cr, Age-specific rate – ai, Age-Standardized Rate – ASR, Age-Standardized Rate according to 95% Confidentiality Interval - CI ASR, Truncated Age-Standardized Rate – TASR, Standardized Rate Ratio- SRR, Standardized Incidence Ratio- SIR, Standardized Incidence Ratio according to 95% Confidentiality Interval - 95% CI SIR, Proportional Incidence Ratio- PIR, Cumulative Rate &

    Cumulative Risk
  • Methods of analytical Epidemiology and statistical parameters: Case-Control Study, Cohort Study, Randomized trial, Relative Risk-RR, Relative Risk according to 95% Confidentiality Interval - 95% CI RR, c 2;

    Confounding, Mantal-Haenszel Method, Attributive Risk- AR, Active and Passive Follow-up, Observed, corrected and relative cumulative survival rates, Kaplan-Meier Method, Cox Regressive Analyses Method, Specificity and sensitivity, Planning of screening, Cause-Result Correlation's,
  • The modern program packages of International Agency on Research of Cancer (IARC, Lyon), brought to Tbilisi in August, 2000 by Dr. Risto Sankila will be presented:
  • GLOBOCAN 1: Cancer Incidence and Mortality Worldwide;

  • EUCAN: Cancer Incidence, Mortality and Prevalence in the European Union;

  • CI5VII: Electronic Database of Cancer Incidence in Five Continents, vol.
  • Participants of practical exercise-testing seminars will be given the exercises on main statistical indicators, provided with ways of decision and correct answers at the end of seminar.
  • Edition of book: "Cancer Epidemiology in Georgia in 1988-1992" Expenses for edition will be ensured by NACC cost-sharing.
  • Edition of book: "Modern methods of Cancer Epidemiological Research"
  • Collected and adapted materials for training courses (lectures, practical seminars) will be edited by NACC cost-sharing as a manual for students. Expected results:
  • Post-graduate researchers, residents, young scientific specialists and medical doctors of NCC and Regional Cancer Centers, also republican regional oncologists, post-graduate researchers and residents and students of Epidemiology and Public Health Departments of Medical Institutes (totally 200 person) will raise their knowledge in:
  • Cancer Epidemiology and Medical Statistics;

  • Population- and Hospital Based Cancer Registration;

  • Gained knowledge on the modern methods of Cancer Epidemiology and Medical Statistics will help selected contingent of young medical specialists (some of whom have already started and some have to start in future their scientific activity) to plan independently their scientific study, chose in a right way the optimal model of Epidemiology study, explore modern methodology of medical statistics and consequently raise the level of scientific research, increase confidential quality of received results and objectiveness of conclusions;

  • Project realization will significantly stimulate the beginning of wide implementation of epidemiological research and modern methods of medical statistics;

  • Project realization will promote the development of primary health care in following directions:
  • As the consequent of training of regional oncologists, the present status of Population Cancer Registry will be improved, accordingly the raise of confidential quality of statistical data will be anticipated at the beginning of new century after the 10 year collapse of registration;

  • Due to the training of regional oncologists on Cancer Registration issues, one more step will be carried out for creation of National Network of Cancer Registry;

  • Due to implementation of Descriptive Epidemiology Studies, monitoring of Cancer Time Trends, detection of main cancer sites, hystotypes and high cumulative risk regions, estimation of Cancer Control prioritized directions and evaluation of their effectiveness will be possible;

  • Due to implementation of Analytical Epidemiology Studies, estimation of cause-result correlation, risk factors (environment, life style, profession and etc.) and formation of high risk groups will be possible;

  • Due to implementation of Epidemiology Studies, evaluation of cancer treatment distant results, effectiveness of diagnostic methods and screening programs (sensitivity, specificity and etc.) will be improved;

    Wide implementation of Epidemiological Research and modern methods of Medical Statistics will be the significant stimuli for development of prevention in Georgia.
