Georgian Tax-Payers Union supported the tobacco producing and importer companies on postponing of Minister of Labor, Health and Social Defense Order # 310/N from August 16, 2001 on: Ratification of limiting accepted content levels of toxic substances, nicotine and tar in tobacco product and it's smoke by 2 years (The new normative was supposed to be put in operation since January 1, 2002) and in order of national tobacco manufacturers assistance has made the critical announcements against the President Mr.Eduard Shevardnadze, Head of Parliament - Mrs. Nino Burjanadze and State Secretary - Mr. Avtandil Djorbenadze via all media means.

Open Announcement of Medical NGOs Alliance

The urgent meeting of Medical NGOs Alliance was held concerning the position of Georgian Tax-Payers Union (January 31, 2002), where the Open Announcement was received, sent on February 4, along with the American Cancer Society Chief executive Officer - Mr. John Seffrin's Support letter to: President Mr.Eduard Shevardnadze, Head of Parliament - Mrs. Nino Burjanadze, State Minister - Mr. Avtandil Djorbenadze, Minister of Labor, Health and Social Defense - Mr. Amiran Gamkrelidze, Head of Health and Social Defense Partliament Committee - Mr. Zezva Gugunishvili, Head of Health Care Parliament Sub-committee - Mr. Lado Chipashvili and head of Public Health Department - Mr. Ramaz Urushadze..

Meeting with Tobacco Manufacturing and Importer Organizations
Tbilisi, February 4, 2002

According to insisted demand of Tobacco Manufacturing and Importer Organizations the meeting was held at Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Defense on 08.00 p.m., February 4, 2002. The tobacco industry was represented by Head persons of all local manufacturing and importing organizations and officers from Georgian Tax-Payers Union. The government was presented by Minister of Labor, Health and Social Defense - Mr. Amiran Gamkrelidze and Minister of Taxes - Mr. Levan Dzneladze. NGO sector was composed by Head of Anti-tobacco National Center - Mr. Gela Kobeshavidze, and NACC/UCCC President - Mr. Vasil Tkeshelashvili. The last presented the American Cancer Society Chief executive Officer - Mr. John Seffrin's Support letter, 20 medical NGOs open announcement and in uncompromised social position.

The Medical and Non-Medical NGOs Union was established

Due to NACC/UCCC initiative the medical and non-medical 23 NGOs meeting was held on 03.00 p.m., February 7, 2002 at Central Clinic of Tbilisi State Medical University, where the Union - Health Promotion Alliance was established. As a Chief Executive Officer of Alliance for 2 years was elected NACC/UCCC President - Mr. Vasil Tkeshelashvili.. The Alliance was registered in Vake-Saburtalo Regional Court (#5/9-559) on 20.02.02.

    On the Board meeting Alliance CEO Vasil Tkeshelashvili has presented the project: Tobacco Control Support in Georgia due to Coalition Efforts.
    The decision was reached to present the project to the Horizonti Foundation grant program competition on Georgian NGOs Coalition Activities Assistance (Deadline 15.03.02, grant budget - 50,000 US $).
    The Memorandum was received on the meeting, according to which the coalition activities in the borders of the mentioned grant would be carried out by 23 organizations among the 32 Alliance member NGOs.

    Health Promotion AllianceIn order to start the creation of Health Promotion Alliance Web, also for presentation of project on the second step of Horizonti Foundation Grant Program, Alliance is starting the collection of information from organizations. The deadline for receiving the material package on each member organization on the flopy disc or via the e-mail is - May 1, 2002.


    Earthquake in Tbilisi
    6-7 grade earthquake was registered in Tbilisi on April 25, 2002, at 22.41 p.m., which caused the death of 4 citizens. Part of the population lost shelters and is in need of humanitarian aid >>>

    The Next Aid of American Cancer Society
    American Cancer Society The ACS CEO - Mr. John Seffrin's Consultant in NIS and Eastern Europe Countries - Mr. Platon Esartia started the visit in Tbilisi on May 1, 2002. ACS donated to Georgia 4 mammography machines. The future ways of cooperation were planned.
