Visit of ACS CEO and UICC Elected President Mr. John R. Seffrin, ACS Vice-President Mr. Michael F. Heron and Dr. Platon Esartia in Tbilisi (Jan, 2001)
Guests from ACS/UICC Were Introduced the Governmental and NGO Health Organizations Acting in Georgia in Field of Cancer Control: American Cancer SocietyThe first visit day was held at Georgian Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Defense under the hosting of Minister - Mr. Avtandil Djorbenadze and member of Georgian Parliament Health and Social Defense Comitte - Mr. Lado Chipashvili, followed by presentations in Public Health Department, where the structure of Georgian Public Health was introduced by Head - Mr. Ramaz Urushadze and Vice-Head - Mrs. Tamar Lobjanidze. Besides, National Cancer Center (NCC) was presented by President - Prof. Revaz Vepkhvadze and Programs Coordinator - Dr. Zaza Zarkua, NGO organization - Cancer Prevention Center by Director - Dr. Rema Gvamichava.International  Union  Against  CancerOn the next day of visit, guests were hosted at NCC, where the Center was presented by General Director - Prof. Revaz Gagua and the NACC by President - Dr. Vasil Tkeshelashvili.
After the evaluation of conducted visit, ACS leader representatives invited the NACC to participate in ACSU ( New York, April 22-29, 2001). On the ACSU, ACS Supported NACC by SEED Grant in amount of 5.000 US $ due to Pfizer Foundation Donation for Realization of Cancer Control Activities in Region.

PUBLIC EDUCATION VIA RADIO FORTUNA
- JOINT PROJECT WITH PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT
NACC with Public Health Department of Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Defence is conducting the joint project for population education via Radio Fortuna on issues of cancer prevention.

    According to ACS invitation, NACC International Affairs Coordinator Levan Bakanidze had an Honor to Participate in ACSU, Held in New York, April 22-29, 2001. Dr. Levan Bakanidze was awarded by ACS with gift - Laptop computer.

    AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY SEED GRANT AND NEXT STEPS OF COOPERATION
    NACC has already determined some items of possible budget for seed grant, particularly.

    UCCC/NACC Proposition to All International Pharmacological Companies
    UCCC offers All International Pharmacological Companies take participation in UCCC/NACC activities in terms of donations, considering the interests of both sides.

    Geocell Donation to NACC
    Geocell, the leader cellular communication company in Georgia, donated ~ 500 US $ to NACC. NACC will use this money as cost-sharing in OSGF Project: Conduction of Training Courses on Cancer Epidemiology and Medical Statistics in Georgian Cancer Centers.

    NACC SUPPORTS THE CREATION OF UCCC
    NACC as initiator of UCCC creation, acknowledging the significance of cancer fight activity extension through Caucasus, has bought the presentation equipmentdue due to funds from ACS SEED Grant (5000 US $) and Geocell Donation (~500 US $) and gifted them to newly established UCCC for Impulsion the Cancer Control Activity in Caucasian Region.

    By the joint presentation of 3 abstracts from congress published materials (18 May, 2001), UCCC President and CEO - Vasil Tkeshelashvili, informed the congress participants on significance of UCCC creation and declared it's organization.

    Presentations on Creation of NACC OPEN Activities Declaration Site
    On May 31, 2001 - 10.00-11.30 a.m.
    Project Director & NACC/UCCC CEO - Vasil Tkeshelashvili has presented the created NACC Site to NCC President - Prof. Revaz Vepkhvadze.
    On May 31, 2001 - 16.00-18.00 p.m.
    The site also was presented to Public Health Department officials of Georgian Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Defense - Head - Mr. Ramaz Urushadze and Vice-Head - Mrs. Tamar Lobjanidze.They stressed on high quality of Site created by right strategical direction of NACC.
    On June 4, 2001 - 10.00-10.30. a.m.
    Dr.Vasil Tkeshelashvili presented the Site to Minister of Labor, Health and Social Defense
    - Mr. Avtandil Djorbenadze. Minister appreciated the presented materials and agreement was reached on carrying out of joint efforts of governmental and NGO bodies in field of Cancer Control.
    Minister mentioned, that in order of starting of Cancer Prevention, the preparation of legislative basis is neccessary. The NGO organizations should take their active participation in this process, particularly, UCCC/NACC. The cooperation between governmental and NGO organizations should be intensified in field of public education via different means of media.

    IREX/IATP Created and Provided NACC as a Grant with Own Virtual Mail Server- mail.nacc.org.ge - for Free of Charge Service for Indefinite Time. Extension of IREX Support is maintained in the borders of IATP (Program Coordinator - Mr. Vakhtang Kontridze).

    OSGF agreed to ensure the placement part of the NACC Site on it's server in order of multimedia presentation optimization on Web created due to ECA/IREX Internet Grant Competition. Extension of OSGF Support is maintained in the borders of Wide Open World program.

    NACC New Project
    NACC with National Cancer Center has prepared the project: Creation of National Cancer Center Web Site for getting the grant funding from ministry of Labor, Health and Social Defense (~5,000 US $).

    The Summer Session of Postgraduate Training is Finished
    American Cancer Society In the borders of OSGF grant, National Cancer Center with UCCC/NACC have organized the Postgraduate Training Courses Summer Session from July 23 to August 3, 2001 in Gori (23-24.07.01), Kutaisi (26-27.07.01), Zugdidi (30-31.07.01) and Batumi (02-03.08.01) on the issues of: Modern Methods of Cancer Epidemiological Research and Medical Statistics.     The Cost-sharer of Postgraduate Training Courses Summer Session were: American Cancer Society, UCCC/NACC, Firm "Geocell". Organizational assistance was provided by Public Health Department and Post-diploma Training State Medical Academy. Informational support was ensured by Radio "Fortuna".

    NACC/UCCC Board Message to American People and American Cancer Society
    NACC/UCCC and the whole Georgia are shocked of massacring tragedy happened with US and whole civilized humanity.
    The terrorism, as cancer, destroys and demolishes the life and the progress. If their prevention is not possible, the only chance to avoid them is the conduction of radical measures.
    NACC/UCCC expresses it's condolence to families of killed and injured civil citizens and is solider to American people and praying for the best. NACC/UCCC is ready for volunteer participation with its limited resources in aid to civilian citizens in case of necessity.

    US Air Force Supports NACC/UCCC in Organization of Training Course in Tbilisi

    The Training Course on: Modern Methods of Cancer Epidemiological Research and Medical Statistics has been conducted on September 17-19, 2001 at National Cancer Centre (Tbilisi).

    Pharmaceutical Conference was performed on September 17
    During the summer sessions, the video projector was damaged as a result of unstable voltage. NACC/UCCC ordered 2 projector bulbs (1 sparing), but the projector was still out of order and was sent to the shop in Moscow, where it was bought by NACC/UCCC through the mediator firm (see report).
    In Moscow it was found, that the power block is also out of order, which wasn't preserved due to used power stabilization equipment. Considering the features of unstable power supply in Georgia, in order of presentation equipment security, the protection system improvement is necessary (including the UPS), which needs additional funding (~1000 US $) in future.
    Because of the existing situation, NACC faced the problem, concerned with it's Web and lecture courses presentations. Due to help of NACC 101-Th honorary member, Captain of US Air Force - Captain Ben Ungerman, this difficulties were fixed by the loaning the video projector for 3 days to NACC/UCCC from Mr. Ungerman's work office - Military Liaison Team in Georgia (MLTG).
    NACC/UCCC thanks the whole staff of MLTG for this kind help, and personally it's Commander, Corneal Scott Thein and NACC member Captain Ben Ungerman.
    At the same time, NACC/UCCC Board expresses sympathy to MLTG because of the 11 September's tragedy against the whole civilized society and with it's limited resources, offers support and assistant in struggling against any kind of aggression, wishes to world the fast solving of new war, without the loosing of in vain victims, establishing the new and fair new rules of peace, the further progress of world civilization.

    The CIS Meeting on Tobacco Control Framework Convention project of World Health Organization was held at Diseases Prevention Center in Moscow on September 28-29.
    Representatives from Georgia - Vasil Tkeshelashvili and Kakhaber Gvinianidze raised on Meeting new conceptual approach issues of Convention.

    The First International Interactive Tele-Conference Against Cancer: Tbilisi-Huston

    Tele-Conference was held on 3 lung cancer patients. Along with discussions, American collegues kindly provided their recommendations on management of these cases.

    According to the II-ND Item of Chapter 23 of "Georgian Legislation on Advertisement", adopted by the parliament on February 18, the VII-TH Item of the VIII-TH Chapter should become active since January 1, 2002, prohibiting the: advertisement of strong alcoholic drinks and Tobacco products through the radio and TV, newspaper and journal's covers.
