NACC report on 1999-2000 activities

NACC conducted 11 educational projects. Particularly, 2 books and 5 booklets were edited, 3 newspaper were prepared and edited, 1 educational TV story was arraigned.
I. Books edited by NACC in 2000:
1. In 1999 Association members (authors: R. Gagua, V. Tkeshelashvili, M. Djincharadze) have written the monograph:
Lung Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention
-with the order and support of Association, which was edited in 2000 in Batumi, by "Publishing House-Adjara" (300 samples). The monograph is assigned to oncologists, epidemiologists, phtisiatrists, pulmonolo-gists, family doctors, and doctors of general profile, students and residents. Cost of publishing-1000 US $;
2. With the NACC order, NACC member and Senior Scientist of Tbilisi State Medical University Oncology Department- Michael Shavdia- has written educational book for patients and their family members:
What should you know about the chemotherapy
Cost of publishing-700 US $.
II. Booklets edited by NACC in 2000

(Recommendations for female reproductive system's cancer prevention and early detection)", -authors: V. Tkeshelashvili, L. Charkviani, G. Nemsadze. The booklet is proposed for females screening preparation at the beginning of secondary prevention. Cost of publishing- 500 US $;

(Recommendations to avoid cancer), -authors: V. Tkeshelashvili, M.Shavdia. The booklet is proposed for population education. Cost of publishing- 500 US $;
4. In 2000 Association members have writtenand edited booklet:
Quite tobacco smoking
(Recommendations to avoid cancer) - authors: V. Tkeshelashvili, R. Gagua. Booklet is proposed for population education. To edit this booklet, Association was sponsored (500 US $) by "Pharmacia & Upjonh";
III. In 2000 Association has edited by own expenses as a booklet Conception:
National Model of Cancer Prevention

- authors- V. Tkeshelashvili, R. Vepkhvadze, R. Gagua, L.Bakanidze. 300 samples-on Georgian and 150 samples- on English language (cost- 100 US$), by publishing company -"SANI". Georgian version of conception was sent to all parliament comities and governmental structures, and distributed in health care system as well. English version was sent to the leading international organizations. For last reason, Association has printed 1,000 postal envelopes with its logo and address (cost-300 US $).
IV. For public education, the following newspaper articles were prepared by NACC president interweaving:
1."In Georgia even oncologists are violating the International Convention on Human Rights (Doctors are not always telling the patient their cancer diagnoses" ("Komsomolskaya Pravda", N 117, (22341), June 30-July 7 2000, p. 14-15).
2."Incurability: Say or Hide?" ("Kviris Palitra-Gza", N 11, August 2000, p. 16-18).
These interweave with Vasil Tkeshelashvili concern the Cancer Control problematic issues; among them the significance of public education and cancer prevention by healthy life style.
3. "Adeishvili became interested by Tele-medicine" ("Akhali Taoba", N 169 (1658), June 22, 2000, p. 6).These article concernes the creation of Georgian Tele-medical Association (GTA), which is the governmental structure and this meeting was attended by Minister of Tranport and Tele-communications - Mr.R. Adeishvili. NACC was the one of the founders of GTA. The NACC President - Vasil Tkeshelashvili had a speech, concerning the significance of Tele-medicine implementation and development in Georgia. He reminded own experience in this field, particularly, the very first Tele-radiological conference via the e-mail link between National Cancer Center (Tbilisi) and Adjarian Cancer Center (Batumi) was conducted in 1995 and First Tele-Radiological & First Tele-Morphological Conference: Tbilisi-Batumi in 1996 & 1997.
Unfortunately, the further development of mentioned activity was failed because of lack of neccessary equipment.NACC plans to prepare the grant project on this issue.
V. In 2000 Association has prepared at its own expenses the TV story on I-St Georgian Channel program "Dilis Paemani". In this 5 minute story, attention was stressed on ways of cancer prevention and significance of early starting of the process of implementation of healthy life style in population (expences-300$).
For implementation of healthy life style in population, in case of funding NACC will additionally edit and distribute already created following recommendations:
1."What can you do to protect yourself against cancer by healthy life style",
2."How to prevent cancer",
3."How to prevent melanoma".
Association also plans to create and edit prevention recommendation booklets on every leading site cancer.
In 2000 NACC has performed the Second Modification to Recommendations:
10 Steps To a Healthier Life Style and Reduced Cancer Risk
- edited by American Cancer Society (ACS) in 1985. The first modification was performed in 1995 by Epidemiology and Cancer Control Department of National Cancer Center (Head-Vasil Tkeshelashvili), adapting ACS recommendations to Georgian conditions, which was revived by Virginia Medical College and Health Care International Programs Director-Dr. Stephan M. Ayers.
