 An overview

What Is Cancer?

Cancer is a disease. It develops when abnormal cells grow and multiply in some organ or tissue of the body. These cells form a mass called tumor.

Are All Tumors Malignant?

No. Tumors that do not invade the tissue of origin or spread to distant organs are nor cancer. They are called benign tumors.

Tumors that have the potential to invade and destroy nearby normal tissue as well as spread to other body sites are called cancer. They are malignant tumors.

How Can I Tell That I Have Cancer?

Without a careful examination by a physician you probably cant. The diagnosis of cancer can be made only after the physician has studied your symptoms and if necessary, orderes x-rays, laboratory tests and a biopsy.

What Does Screening For Cancer Mean?

Screening means checking for disease in people who don't have any symptoms. Periodical tests for cervical cancer and mammography for breast cancer are two examples of screening tests are very effective.

What Is Mammography?

Mammography is a special type of x-ray procedure used to detect cancer of breast. Since modern mammography equipment uses low dose x-rays. this test carries no danger of over-exposure.

Are Lumps In The Breast Likely To Be Cancer?

Most breast lumps are benign due to changes in breast tissue not to cancer. However, if you have "lumpy breasts" your physicians may order a mammogram to differentiate between the lumps of fibrocystic tissue and those of breast cancer.

Is Bleeding From The Rectum A Sign Of Cancer?

Not usually.

Causes and Prevention

What Causes Cancer?

The causes of many types of cancer are unknown. However studies strongly suggest that up to 80% of all cancer cases may result from lifestyle factors such as our smoking habits, the food we eat and the time we spend in the sun. Cancers caused by these factors might be reduced if we chose healthier lifestyle.

What are Links Between Diet And Cancer?

Diets rich in fibre, vegetables and fruit are linked to lower rates of some cancers. High fat foods, alcohol and smoke are linked to higher rates of some types of cancer. Studies suggest that high fat diet may be linked to the development of breast and colorectal cancers. High alcohol intake combined with smoking cigarettes greatly increases the risk for cancer of the mouth, larynx and upper respiratory tract.

How Can I Modify My Diet To Reduce My Risk For Cancer?

Enjoy a variety of foods

Emphasize cereals, breads, other grain products, vegetables and fruits

Choose lower fat dairy products, leaner meat and foods prepared with little or no fat.

Achieve and maintain a healthy body weight by enjoying regular physical activity and healthy eating.
